Hurricane Andrew struck south Florida on August 24, 1992 at 5 am.
The hurricane passed south of Coral Gables with heavy damage to Florida City, Homestead, Perrine, and all areas east to the coastline. Highest sustained winds were 145 mph with gusts up to 175 mph. Over 20 billion dollars in property damage was caused by the storm.
This image of Hurricane Andrew was acquired from the Landsat 5 satellite after it passed over the west coast of Florida. The state of Florida used Landsat satellite imagery to help assess damage caused by the hurricane.
